Namyangju-si was once part of Yangju-gun. It separated in April 1980. Later, in 1995, Migeum-si merged with Namyangju-gun. This formed the urban and rural complex we see today. The city hall resides in Geumgok-dong and Dasan-dong. Namyangju is divided into 6-eup, 3-myeon, and 7-dong administrative districts.
