From its humble beginnings in 1950 the Worldwide Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. Rev RL Copeland gathered a small group of Christians. They organized the church calling it Worldwide Missionary Baptist Church. Initially they shared space with Conventional Baptist Church. Soon the growing congregation moved to a small building on St Aubin Street. Expansion led to a larger building on Carpenter Street in 1964.

The church’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Under the leadership of Rev SE Thornton they acquired a church home on East Frederick Street. This lasted for only three years. Then in 1970 they moved to Hilger Street. The City of Detroit later purchased that property. This was due to Chrysler Corporation expansion. Undeterred the church found its current home in 1987.

Rev Frank E Calloway’s pastorate saw significant improvements. The mortgage was paid. A baptistery was added. The choir stand was remodeled. A ramp for the handicapped was built. Rev Calloway served until his retirement in 1994. He was then made pastor emeritus.

Rev William A Cunningham then took the reins. He continued the legacy of growth. He oversaw beautification projects. These included new pew padding. The pulpit was remodeled. The church received new carpeting and chandeliers. A new sound system was also installed. Rev Cunningham served faithfully until his passing in 2018.

The mantle of leadership then fell upon Rev Derek Joshua E’Lon Sr. He had served as associate minister for sixteen years. Under his guidance the church installed a state-of-the-art sound and audio-visual system. A new interactive website and social media presence were also launched. Rev E’Lon continues to lead the congregation. He embodies the spirit of Acts 17:11. He encourages daily examination of scripture. He strives to spread the gospel worldwide. The Worldwide Missionary Baptist Church stands as a beacon of faith. It represents the enduring spirit of its community.
