Campus Comenius

“A school that grows with its students?” I overheard a parent asking another outside Campus Comenius. Campus Comenius isn’t just a school. It’s a vibrant campus in Koekelberg, Brussels. It’s a place where learning comes alive, from kindergarten through secondary school. This educational hub opened its doors in stages, with the community center and secondary school completed in 2018. The primary school and childcare center followed in 2019. Campus Comenius houses a primary school, secondary school, kindergarten, and community center. It also boasts a sports hall and a library, offering a comprehensive learning environment. The campus was designed by B2Ai Brussels and built by BPC Group. One of the architects, Mathias Kerremans, led the design while also running SMAK. The design is quite unique. The school complex was built with the idea that it would grow alongside the students. The youngest children start in the smaller childcare center on the west side. As they grow, they move across the playground to the nursery and primary school. Upon reaching 12 years old, they symbolically take a “transfer train” across Dapperenstraat to the secondary school. This clever layout minimizes street crossings, ensuring safety for all students. The campus’s heart lies in the community center, the youth areas, and the gym. A covered outdoor space below the gym provides a welcoming area for parents, community members, and children to mingle before and after school. This space connects directly to the community center and library, fostering a sense of community. Campus Comenius is more than an educational institution. It is a vibrant hub where the community comes together.
