What if a church could stand as a testament to resilience? That’s the story of Evangelisch-Lutherische Paulus-Gemeinde in Berlin. This church rose from the aftermath of division.

Let’s step back to a divided Berlin. After August 13, 1961, the Berlin Wall severed communities. Parishioners from Kreuzberg and Neukölln could no longer reach their church on Annenstrasse in Berlin-Mitte. This created a pressing need for a new place of worship. The Evangelisch-Lutherische Paulus-Gemeinde was born.

The Evangelisch-Lutherische Paulus-Gemeinde was inaugurated on Passion Sunday in 1965. It was designed as a community center. The church provided a spiritual home for those separated by the Wall. In 2015, the congregation celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The building’s architecture is unique. The modern sanctuary adjoins a residential building. A simple large cross on the residential building’s windowless side indicates the church. The understated plastered building is topped with a flat pyramid roof. This roof extends into a flat roof at the entrance.

Inside, the Kirchsaal is also covered by a pyramid ceiling. Light streams through a large window and narrow window slits. These slits run along the upper part of the entire wall. A similar window arrangement exists on the opposite wall. The vestibule is on the ground floor of the residential building.

Music is an important part of worship here. The Evangelisch-Lutherische Paulus-Gemeinde boasts an organ built in 1967. Karl Schuke Berliner Orgelbauwerkstatt created this instrument to support congregational singing.

Today, the Evangelisch-Lutherische Paulus-Gemeinde continues to be a vibrant community. Around 300 members strong, they celebrate their faith. They cherish the fellowship with God and each other. This welcoming community is open to all. It embraces those who seek to praise God with contemporary songs and instruments. It welcomes those searching for direction. It invites those ready to embrace the Christian faith.

The Evangelisch-Lutherische Paulus-Gemeinde stands as an independent Lutheran church. It is self-funded through member contributions. At the heart of its theology is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This message is rooted in the Bible and the confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Evangelisch-Lutherische Paulus-Gemeinde offers a message of hope. It provides community and unwavering faith.
