Have you ever seen a marsh island reborn? Stand here before Yellow Bar Hassock in Jamaica Bay. This wasn’t always a thriving wetland. For decades Yellow Bar Hassock was slowly disappearing. Erosion pollution and sea level rise threatened this vital ecosystem. But look around you now.

Yellow Bar Hassock is a testament to human ingenuity and environmental collaboration. The US Army Corps of Engineers spearheaded a massive restoration project. They partnered with New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey also contributed.

The project was ambitious. Imagine 375000 cubic yards of sand. That’s the amount dredged from the Ambrose Channel. This sand was beneficially used. It wasn’t dumped into the ocean. Instead it rebuilt Yellow Bar Hassock. The Corps reshaped the island. They created 67 acres of new marsh. They also restored 45 acres of existing wetlands.

Over 20966 plants were carefully replanted. Thirteen acres of hummocks were relocated. Hummocks are elevated mounds of vegetation. They’re vital for marsh stability. The hummocks were carefully saved and replanted in the higher areas of the newly created island.

This restoration wasn’t just about sand and plants. It’s about the future of Jamaica Bay. The marsh islands support an incredible range of wildlife. They filter pollutants improving water quality. They protect shorelines from erosion. They are nurseries for fish and birds. This project was a huge win for the environment and taxpayers.

Yellow Bar Hassock’s transformation is ongoing. But already wildlife is returning. Horseshoe crabs are laying eggs. A harbor seal was even spotted sunning itself on the pipeline during construction. This is proof of the project’s success. This collaboration between government and conservationists created a vibrant ecosystem where there was once only barren land. This is Yellow Bar Hassock a symbol of hope for Jamaica Bay’s future.
