The Chapel of Peace Lutheran Church began its journey not in California but far away in Washington Missouri. In the spring of 1980 a group of Lutherans sought to establish a mission church. Pastor Paul Baehmann arrived to survey the land. The American Lutheran Church acquired five acres of land. In November 1980 the church officially became a mission.

The cornerstone of the current building was laid in 1982. A significant change occurred. The name Peace Lutheran Church was adopted. This reflected a desire for a church that embodied love and harmony. The name change signified a shift in focus from mere structure to the spirit within. It aimed to create a community built on peace and mutual understanding.

In 1988 a major event shaped the church’s identity. Three Lutheran denominations merged forming the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America ELCA. Peace Lutheran Church became self-supporting marking a milestone in its growth and independence. It signifies their ability to sustain themselves financially. This allowed them to focus more on their mission and community outreach.

Later a program called the Partnership for Missional Church further redefined their purpose. This program encouraged a shift from an inward to an outward focus. The church became more involved with the community. Their mission expanded beyond the church walls.

The Chapel of Peace Lutheran Church has been served by dedicated pastors. Reverend Paul Baehmann served from 1980 to 2005. Reverend Kenneth Knutson followed from 2005 to 2008. Reverend Robin Morgan served as an interim pastor from 2008 to 2010. Currently Reverend Aimee Appell leads the congregation. Their collective leadership has guided the church through its evolution.
