What if these walls could talk? Captain’s Garden Hindu Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Colombo. It stands as a testament to faith and community.

Let’s step back in time to the late 1700s. The Dutch controlled the maritime provinces. King Rajadhi Rajasinha reigned in Kandy. South Indian Chetti traders arrived in Colombo. They sought to establish their businesses. They settled in the Captain’s Garden area. This area was then known as Gilmabhoodhawatta.

These traders were devout followers of Saivaism. Initially, they worshipped a Sivalingam under a tree. Sri Veerapathran Chettyar cared for this sacred symbol. The Chettyar community supported him. In 1783, they laid the foundation for a new temple on his land.

Another story tells of a worshipper at the Bala Selvavinayakar Murti temple. He vowed to build a proper Sivan temple if blessed with a child. His wish was granted. He erected the Kailasanathar Sivan Kovil to fulfill his vow.

Over time, the temple evolved into a fully developed place of worship. It became known as Sri Kailasanatha Swamy Kovil. Sri Veerapathran Chettyar oversaw the temple’s early days. After his death in 1828, Sri Sithambaram Ramiah Chettyar took over. In 1851, the Chettyar community formed a Board of Trustees. They managed the temple and its rituals. In 1933, the Board made significant improvements.

In 1913, the Railway Department acquired the temple lands. The temple became encircled by railway lines. Yet, it remained a spiritual sanctuary.

Today, Captain’s Garden Hindu Temple houses Murtis of various deities. These include Sivan, Pillaiyar, Ambal, and Subramaniyar. You will also find shrines for Vinayakar and Nadarajar. There are shrines for Maha Vishnu, Saniyeswarar, and Navagraha deities. Kasi Viswanatha and Kasi Visaladchi also have shrines. Brahma, Durga, and Kali Amman are also honored.
