Isn’t it fascinating how spaces can transform? The B.L.O. Ateliers stand before us now a testament to Berlin’s ever-evolving spirit. It is a place where art and industry intertwine.
The B.L.O. Ateliers are one of the largest artist communities in Berlin. Imagine almost 90 creative minds working side by side. They produce art on the site of a former railway depot. This was the Berlin-Lichtenberg-Ost railway depot.
The variety here is truly unique. You’ll find sculpture, film effects and photography. There is also graphics, woodwork, painting and metal work. Even bicycle and boomerang construction takes place here. Furniture construction and fashion design thrive in this space. Music, product design, stone and concrete work are also represented. The B.L.O. Ateliers even support theater and film equipment creation.
But the B.L.O. Ateliers are more than just workshops. They are a hub for cultural exchange. Concerts, film screenings and theater performances happen regularly. Lectures and exhibitions engage the public. Some studios even offer workshops, sharing their skills.
Lockkunst e.V. is the sponsoring association. It organizes charitable projects with cultural and municipal partners. This shows a commitment to the community. The B.L.O. Ateliers provide space for a diverse group of artists and makers. It is one of the largest artist communities in East Berlin. Visual artists, musicians and photographers find a home here. Even blacksmiths and special effects technicians contribute.
They produce media art, sculptures and installations. You can also find furniture, concrete castings and metal works. Even bamboo bikes and boomerangs are made here. The B.L.O. Ateliers engage the public through various events. There are concerts, workshops and film screenings. Lectures and theater performances also take place. Exhibitions showcase the incredible talent within these walls.
“OH! Queer” is a series of events that takes place here. It features cross-cultural artists in Lichtenberg. Irina Novarese and Marco Pezzotta curated KIN*K. This was a series of international video art screenings. It ran for several years with support from B.L.O. Ateliers LockKunst e.V..
The B.L.O. Ateliers also host the HIER & JETZT: Connections program. This is an exchange and residency program for artists in exile. Artists based at B.L.O. Ateliers launched it. The Cultural Office of Berlin City District Lichtenberg funds it.
