Behold the Fântâna Zodiac. It stands as a testament to Bucharest’s artistic heritage. This fountain is not just a water feature. It is a symbol of the city’s vibrant past.

The Fântâna Zodiac is located in Piața Libertății. It marks the main entrance to Carol I Park in Sector 4. King Carol II inaugurated it in 1935. The inauguration coincided with the “Luna Bucureștilor” festivities. These festivities lasted from May 9 to June 9. At that time, the square was named Piața Mareșal Joffre.

Octav Doicescu conceived the Fântâna Zodiac. Mac Constantinescu created the modernist Art Deco mosaics. August Schmiedigen and Dorin Pavel executed the works.

The Fântâna Zodiac features a large circular basin. A stone cup rises from its center. This cup rests on a support of four curved legs. The cup’s exterior is adorned with zodiac symbols. These symbols are crafted from black mosaic on a gray background. Look closely. You can see the constellations dancing. Powerful jets of water cascade over the cup’s edges.

The Fântâna Zodiac is more than just a pretty sight. It is a designated historical monument. It is listed in the 2010 List of Historical Monuments of Bucharest.

The fountain is not only a monument. It also underwent modernization. The Sustainable Development Plan of Bucharest included upgrades. The upgrades included replacing the circulation pump and electrical system.

Legend says that if you enter a fountain during the day, you can see the stars. You do not need to enter this fountain to see the stars. Just look at the Fântâna Zodiac. Here the stars are always visible.

So take a moment to appreciate the artistry and history. The Fântâna Zodiac connects us to Bucharest’s past. It reminds us of the beauty and wonder that can be found in the most unexpected places.
