An octagonal wonder stands before you. This is the Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Kirche in Berlin. Built between 1980 and 1981 it’s a testament to postmodern architecture. Its design is quite unique. It’s not your typical church.

The Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Kirche wasn’t always this impressive structure. Before its construction the community held services in less conventional places. Initially a garden shed then a clubhouse. Later a temporary church building served as a place of worship. They even purchased a prefabricated house. This served as a community center before the current church was built.

The need for a larger more permanent church was evident. A church building association was formed in 1971. An architectural competition was held in 1973. The most cost-effective design was chosen. However a general construction ban delayed the project. The community persevered. Eventually they secured funding through various means including the sale of land. A significant donation from Bishop Martin Kruse helped make it all possible.

The cornerstone was laid on November 9 1980. The topping-out ceremony followed on May 8 1981. Bishop Kruse himself consecrated the new church on November 29 1981. The Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Kirche was finally complete.

The building’s exterior is clad in bricks topped with a tiled tent roof. A glass lantern crowns the structure illuminating the interior. The main space centers on the altar. The surrounding gallery is supported by a ring of pillars. The design is inspired by the Dorfkirche Zehlendorf although the altar’s positioning differs.

Eighteen stained-glass windows grace the lower part of the church. These were created by Sigmund Hahn. Inside a small organ sits. This organ previously resided in other Berlin churches. It’s a piece of history within the church itself. The Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Kirche in Berlin. A building steeped in history yet modern in design. It continues to serve its community.
