Was Francisco de Paula Santander really the man of laws? This monument honors a figure of immense importance. This is the Monumento a Francisco de Paula Santander. Let’s explore the life and legacy of this Colombian hero.

Francisco José de Paula Santander y Omaña was born in 1792. He became a military and political leader. He played a key role in Colombia’s independence war from 1810 to 1819. Santander served as acting President of Gran Colombia from 1819 to 1826. Later, Congress elected him President of the Republic of New Granada. He served from 1832 to 1837.

Santander earned the nickname “The Man of the Laws.” He is credited with laying the legal foundation for democracy in Colombia. He also established the country’s first public education system. Because of this, he is a National Hero in Colombia. He is also known as the “Organizer of Victory.”

At 18, Santander abandoned his studies. He began his military career fighting for the Patriot cause. He fought against the Royalists. He became an officer in the army of the Federalist United Provinces of New Granada.

In 1813, Santander was wounded and captured during the civil war. This was between the Federalists and the Centralists. He was later released. He served under Manuel del Castillo y Rada. He also served under Simón Bolívar. They defended the Cúcuta Valley from the Royalists.

For three years, Santander defended the valley. Then he was defeated at the Battle of Cachirí. This happened during the Spanish Reconquest of New Granada. With the collapse of the first republic, he fled. He joined Venezuelan Patriot forces in the Casanare Province. He first served under José Antonio Páez. Then he joined Bolívar’s forces in Guayana in 1817.

Under Bolívar’s command, Santander led troops in the 1819 campaign. This was to liberate New Granada. He fought valiantly at the battles of Paya, Gameza, Vargas Swamp and Boyacá. He helped liberate his homeland from Spanish rule.

In December 1819, Gran Colombia was created. Santander was initially chosen as Vice-President of Cundinamarca. In 1821, he was elected Vice-President of Gran Colombia. Bolívar was President. For six years, with Bolívar away, Santander was acting president. He used his skills to create foundations for the new republic.

Political differences arose between Santander and Bolívar. In 1828, Bolívar accused Santander of plotting to assassinate him. No evidence was found. However, Santander was sentenced to death. This was changed to exile. He spent four years in Europe and the United States.

After Gran Colombia dissolved, Santander was elected President. The Republic of New Granada elected him in 1832. He served until 1837. After his presidency, he was a representative for Bogotá. His health declined and he died in 1840.

Standing before the Monumento a Francisco de Paula Santander let us remember the legacy of a man. He helped shape Colombia. His dedication to law and education continues to influence the nation today. The monument serves as a reminder. It reminds us of his vital role in Colombian history.
