Beyond the walls of the living, there lies a city of silence. This is the Cimitero di Baselica Bologna. It is not just a cemetery, but an open-air museum.

The Cimitero di Baselica Bologna is one of Europe’s oldest cemeteries. It is a monument renowned worldwide. Its sculptures and architecture from the 19th and 20th centuries are unique.

In 1800, the Health Commission chose this area for a cemetery. It was outside town. The location was perfect for air circulation. The Cimitero di Baselica Bologna officially opened in 1801.

Architect Ercole Gasparini designed the monumental entrance in 1802. He planned big pillars topped with statues. In 1811, Gasparini designed a portico. This connected the cemetery to the Sanctuary of San Luca.

The Chiostro Terzo became the first cemetery area. The Chiostro d’Ingresso was also among the first areas. The Sala della Pietà and Sala delle Tombe followed. The Sala delle Tombe was once the monks’ recreation room. From here, you can access the Loggia delle Tombe. From there, you proceed to the Aula Gemina.

The Sala delle Catacombe leads to a gallery. This gallery has three aisles. It ends with the Colombario. The Pepoli-Murat and Angelelli monuments stand out. They are at the center of the rooms.

The Campo degli Ospedali collects Art Nouveau monuments. These monuments stand along the boundary wall. The cemetery houses the ossuary of fallen Partisans. Architect Piero Bottoni designed it.

Next to the cemetery are areas for non-Catholics. There is also a Jewish cemetery. A crematory area and a cinerary are also located here.

The Cimitero di Baselica Bologna holds Etruscan tombs. These tombs date back to the 6th and 4th centuries BC. Antonio Zannoni led the archaeological excavations. The finds are now in the Archaeological Civic Museum.

Many important figures rest here. Marco Minghetti rests in the Cimitero di Baselica Bologna. Giorgio Morandi is also buried here. Giosuè Carducci and Nicola Zanichelli are here too. Even the singer Lucio Dalla calls this place home.

Lord Byron and Charles Dickens visited the Cimitero di Baselica Bologna. They were among the many international visitors. The cemetery became a destination for 19th-century tourism.

Don’t miss the Third Cloister and the Seventh Cloister. These cloisters house important statues. The Galleria degli Angeli is a must-see. The Sala del Colombario is also worth visiting.

The Magnani Cell features a bronze sculpture. Pasquale Rizzoli created it on a blue mosaic. It’s a fine example of Italian Liberty style. The Ossuary Monument honors Partisan Soldiers of WWII.

The Cimitero di Baselica Bologna is more than graves. It is a journey through art, history, and memory. As you wander its paths, remember the lives and stories. They shaped not only this city, but the world. The whispers of the past echo. They invite contemplation and remembrance in this city of the dead.
