The Strand was once part of Book Row a six-block area full of bookstores. It’s the last surviving bookstore from that era.
The Strand has been in dozens of movies and TV shows. Many New York rock musicians worked there in the 1970s. Patti Smith Tom Verlaine Richard Hell and Sam Shepard all shelved books or worked the cash register. The store has a huge selection of used and new books. It also has a rare books room accessible only by elevator. It holds some incredibly valuable books.
