FDR Park has a rich history. It was designed by the Olmsted Brothers the renowned landscape architecture firm. The park was built on reclaimed marshland. Think of it. This land once a tidal marsh teeming with wildlife has been transformed into a vibrant recreational space.
The park’s transformation began in the early 20th century. Imagine the dredging the filling the meticulous planning. The Sesquicentennial Exposition in 1926 further shaped the park. Changes occurred but the Olmsted Brothers’ original design still shines especially west of Broad Street.
The park’s name changed to Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park in 1955. A fitting tribute to a great American leader. The park boasts a legacy. It has a historic boathouse a gazebo and even the American Swedish Historical Museum. These structures stand as silent witnesses to the park’s history.
