The Indira Gandhi Arena stands proudly in the Indraprastha Estate. It is the largest indoor sports arena in India, rivaling the grandest in Asia. Built in 1982 by the Government of India, it was originally known as the Indraprastha Stadium. It was built to host indoor games for the 1982 Asian Games.
Imagine the energy that pulsed through this arena during those games. Athletes from across the continent converged here, their dreams riding on every serve, every jump, every point. The arena’s grounds cover a vast area of 102 acres. Since its construction, the Indira Gandhi Arena has hosted countless tournaments and events. Political rallies and musical concerts have also been held here.
Named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the arena has a seating capacity of 14,348. The Indira Gandhi Arena has been repeatedly renovated and modernized. In preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the arena underwent a significant upgrade. This ₹240 crore renovation equipped the arena with state-of-the-art soundproof synthetic walls, advanced lighting systems, and an impressive audio system.
Picture the transformation. From a functional stadium to a world-class venue capable of hosting international events. A new air-conditioned Velodrome was added for ₹150 crore. This further enhanced the complex’s appeal to a wider range of sports.
The Indira Gandhi Arena also hosted matches of the first-ever International Premier Tennis League tournament. It took place from December 6 to 8, 2014. The Indian Aces tennis club calls this arena their home.
More recently in March 2023, the stadium hosted the IBA Women’s Amateur Boxing World Championships. Boxers from around the globe stepped into the ring. They displayed their skill and determination.
The Indira Gandhi Arena complex includes other notable venues. The Indira Gandhi Indoor Cycling Velodrome has a seating capacity of 3,800. It hosted track cycling events during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The KD Jadhav Indoor Hall, with a capacity of 6,000, hosted wrestling events for the same games. It was named after K. D. Jadhav. He won India’s first individual Olympic medal after independence.
