A whisper of history. That’s what the Grancino in Milan evokes. It’s not a grand palace or a towering cathedral. It is a family name a legacy etched in the very fabric of Milan’s musical soul. The Grancino family’s workshop once thrived here on Contrada Larga now Via Larga. Imagine the sounds of wood scraping against wood the sweet scent of varnish filling the air. These weren’t just any craftsmen. The Grancinos were the heart of Milanese violin making.

Giovanni Grancino the most famous of the family was born in 1637. His godfather Michel Angelo Grancino was the Maestro di Cappella at Milan Cathedral. That’s powerful influence! Think about it. The most important musician in town was Giovanni’s uncle. Giovanni’s workshop was the main center for violin making in Milan. Other makers learned their craft there. Carlo Giuseppe Testore founder of another significant Milanese luthier family was one of them.

The Grancinos weren’t just copying others. They had their own style. Early instruments show the influence of Niccolò Amati of Cremona. However Giovanni’s later work adopted a flatter arching and narrower form. This was inspired by the great Stradivari. The Grancino cellos were larger than average yet they possessed a clear sound distinctly Italian. Giovanni used a beautiful orange oil varnish. His instruments are rare. Many were mislabeled as the work of famous Cremonese makers.

The Grancino family’s success wasn’t without tragedy. A bitter feud erupted between Giovanni Battista Grancino Giovanni’s son and Antonio Maria Lavazza another violin maker. This led to a deadly sword fight. Giovanni Battista fled. The family workshop was lost. He eventually received a pardon but his life and the family’s business were irrevocably changed. The Grancino workshop closed its doors. The family never regained its former glory.

Today the Grancino name lives on in the extraordinary instruments they created. These violins violas cellos and double basses are coveted by musicians worldwide. Their legacy continues to inspire. Their story is a reminder of the passion skill and heartbreak that can shape even the most beautiful creations. The Grancino legacy endures a testament to the power of family and artistic vision. This humble location echoes with the music of a bygone era. It is a hidden gem a testament to Milan’s rich musical history. Remember the Grancino family. Remember their story.
