Ever wonder what Lunada Bay looked like before it became the surfing paradise we know today? In the 1920s, Lunada Bay wasn’t about catching waves. It was all about nurturing nature. The Lunada Bay Nursery was the heart of the Palos Verdes Project. Farnham B. Martin, the superintendent of parks, had a vision. He saw a lush, green peninsula, a stark contrast to the coastal wilderness. Martin, along with a team of Mexican workers, transformed Lunada Bay. They collected plants and saplings from Montecito Estates in Santa Barbara, nurturing them at the Lunada Bay Nursery. They offered these treasures to new property owners, advising them on planting, even before their homes were built. Martin believed in the power of kindness, especially towards plants. His dedication resulted in over 600,000 trees planted in just four years. A nearby park, Farnham B. Martin Park, stands as a tribute to his legacy. Now, let’s fast forward to 1961. A dense fog rolled into Lunada Bay, obscuring the coastline. The S.S. Dominator, a Greek freighter, unknowingly drifted too close. Carrying tons of wheat and beef, the ship met its demise on the rocky reefs below Rocky Point. The crew abandoned ship, leaving the Dominator to the mercy of the waves. While the ship slowly broke apart, the local lobster population feasted on the leftover grain. The rotting meat, however, became a problem. The solution? They set it on fire, creating a unique, albeit unpleasant, chapter in Lunada Bay’s story. Today, little remains of the Dominator above water. But during low tide, hikers can explore the remnants along the shoreline. Divers too are drawn to the underwater wreckage, a ghostly reminder of the freighter’s fate. Before we leave Lunada Bay, let’s take a drive down Palos Verdes Drive West. Did you know this wide road, originally called Granvia La Costa, was carved out of Bluff Cove? The dramatic “Douglas Cut” made this scenic route possible, connecting communities along the peninsula. Originally, the road was designed to include an electric railway down the center, hence its width. Lunada Bay. A place where nature’s beauty intertwines with human stories. From a nursery’s gentle beginnings to a shipwreck’s drama and a road carved from a cliff, Lunada Bay has seen it all.
