Gazing upon the Julius-Fučík-Denkmal, can you hear the echoes of his words? This memorial, nestled within Bürgerpark Pankow in Berlin, isn’t just concrete and bronze. It’s a resounding declaration of defiance. The Julius-Fučík-Denkmal commemorates the Czech journalist and writer, Julius Fučík, executed by the Nazis in 1943. He was a staunch anti-fascist, using his words as weapons against oppression. The memorial itself is striking. Five towering stelae reach towards the sky, a powerful symbol of his unwavering spirit. Three of the stelae form the centerpiece. The tallest one proudly displays a bronze bust of Fučík. Another stelae bears his poignant last words, etched in German, Czech, and Russian: “People, I loved you. Be vigilant!” These words are taken from his “Notes from the Gallows,” a testament to his courage even in the face of death. The Julius-Fučík-Denkmal was a gift from the youth of the USSR to East Berlin, dedicated during the 10th World Festival of Youth and Students in 1973. It was designed by Czech architect Vladimír Pýcha and sculptor Zdeněk Němeček. Look closely at the stelae. You’ll see an ornamental pattern, almost like a woodcarving. This intricate design adds another layer of meaning to the monument. The Julius-Fučík-Denkmal stands as a sobering reminder of the fight against fascism and the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of injustice. Fučík’s words resonate through the years, urging us to remember his sacrifice and to never forget the lessons learned from the past.
