Why are these islands so close to Athens yet feel a world away? Welcome to the Regional Unit of Islands, a hidden gem within Attica. This isn’t just one island. It’s a collection of enchanting isles scattered across the Saronic Gulf, including the famed Saronic Islands, plus a sliver of the Peloponnese peninsula, and a sprinkle of islands off its eastern coast. The Regional Unit of Islands became part of Attica in a bit of a geographical shuffle. Originally, islands like Cythera, Hydra, Spetses, and Troizinia-Methana belonged to Argolis and Korinthos. Then, in 1929, they were brought under Attica’s wing. Later, in 1964, a new prefecture, Piraeus, was formed, absorbing the Islands. But this was short-lived. Piraeus Prefecture was dissolved in 1972, returning the islands to Attica under a newly reformed Piraeus Prefecture. Finally, the 2011 Kallikratis reform solidified their place as the Regional Unit of Islands within the Attica Region. The Regional Unit of Islands boasts a rich history. Its strategic location made it a key player in ancient trade routes and naval battles. Today, these islands offer a tranquil escape from the bustling city of Athens. Imagine yourself sailing through the turquoise waters, the salty air on your face, the sun warming your skin. Explore the charming villages, each with its unique character and traditions. Discover hidden coves and beaches. Savor fresh seafood at a seaside taverna. The Regional Unit of Islands offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and island charm. It’s a reminder that even within a bustling region like Attica, pockets of tranquility and adventure await those who seek them.
