Gazing upon this seemingly ordinary bridge, could you ever guess its profound connection to the dawn of Russian railways? This, my friends, is the Vitebsky Overpass, or Витебский путепровод, a structure intimately intertwined with the Vitebsky Railway Station, a true pioneer in Russian transportation. The Vitebsky Railway Station, originally named Tsarskoselsky, was the first railway station built not only in Saint Petersburg but in the entire Russian Empire. Its inaugural journey in 1837 marked a transformative moment in Russian history. The station connected Saint Petersburg with the imperial residence at Tsarskoe Selo, now Pushkin, a journey the first steam engine, the Provorny, completed in a mere 35 minutes. The Vitebsky Overpass, though not part of the original 1837 structure, emerged later as the railway lines expanded and the station adopted its current name, Vitebsky, after the Belarusian city of Vitebsk. The station’s first building, a modest wooden structure designed by Konstantin Thon, quickly proved inadequate. By 1852, a larger stone building replaced it, undergoing further expansions in the 1870s. Yet, even this expanded station eventually became unsuitable for the growing passenger flow. In 1901, Stanislaw Brzozowski embarked on a complete reconstruction, culminating in the magnificent Art Nouveau masterpiece we see reflections of today. Brzozowski’s design, featuring a soaring 20-meter high main hall, stained glass, and a marble staircase with bronze inlays, showcased the opulence of the era. Alongside the main station, he also constructed the Imperial Pavilion, a private waiting room for Tsar Nicholas II and his family. The station’s elevated train shed, five platforms, and luggage elevators have remarkably survived through the years. This preservation has made the Vitebsky Station a favored location for filming period pieces, including Soviet adaptations of Anna Karenina and Sherlock Holmes stories. While Soviet renovations unfortunately stripped away some architectural details, a meticulous restoration in 2003 revived its original Art Nouveau splendor. Today, the Vitebsky Overpass stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Vitebsky Railway Station, a symbol of progress and a gateway to destinations far and wide. It whispers tales of imperial journeys, architectural marvels, and the relentless march of time, a tangible link to the very birth of Russian railways.
