Sheep Meadow became a haven for grazing sheep, their woolly presence lending the meadow its distinctive name. These sheep, housed in a nearby Victorian-style sheepfold, played a vital role in maintaining the meadow’s health. They trimmed the grass and fertilized the land, a natural lawn care service. The sheepfold, once a hub of bleating and baaing, now stands as the elegant Tavern on the Green restaurant. In 1934, the sheep were moved, first to Prospect Park, then to a farm upstate. The era of sheep came to a close, but the meadow’s legacy continued. Sheep Meadow evolved into a gathering place, a stage for historic moments. From the be-ins of the 1960s to massive protests against the Vietnam War, Sheep Meadow has witnessed the city’s evolving spirit. It has hosted concerts with stars like Barbra Streisand and James Taylor, their melodies echoing across the green. It even served as a temporary base for Black Hawk helicopters after the September 11th attacks. Today, Sheep Meadow continues to be a place of respite and recreation.
