In 1322, Tegel is mentioned in historical records as a Kirchdorf, a village with a church, marking its significance in the region. Over the centuries, Dorfkirche Alt-Tegel underwent a series of transformations. A Fachwerkkirche, a traditional half-timbered structure, replaced the original wooden church. This, too, eventually gave way to a more substantial stone edifice in 1756, a rectangular hall with plastered facades and a square western tower. As Tegel grew, so did the need for a larger church. The stone structure was completely rebuilt in 1871-72, but even this expansion proved insufficient. Finally, in 1911, the current Dorfkirche Alt-Tegel began to take shape. Designed by Jürgen Kröger, the church embodies a neo-Romanesque style, a nod to the architectural traditions of the past. Its three-aisled nave, apse, and imposing western tower create a sense of grandeur and permanence. Admire the intricate bronze doors, crafted by the skilled hands of Ottomar Holdefleiss. Dorfkirche Alt-Tegel has not remained untouched by the passage of time. In 1943, an exploding air mine damaged the church roof. Services were temporarily held in the neighboring parish hall until it too was destroyed in 1944. Undeterred, the community continued their worship in the school auditorium until the church was restored in 1946. Subsequent renovations in the 1960s and 1970s further shaped the church’s interior and exterior, ensuring its continued presence as a vital part of the Tegel community.
