Viktor Tikhonov was born in Moscow on June 4 1930. He passed away in the same city on November 24 2014. His journey from a young boy to a legendary coach is a captivating story. Tikhonov’s father died in 1942 near Stalingrad during World War II. His mother raised Viktor and his brother.
Tikhonov started working as a repairman at an autobahn park at age 12. In 1943 he returned to school. His hockey career began in the army. He joined the VVS MVO hockey team in 1948. From 1949 to 1963 he played as a defenseman for VVS MVO and Dynamo Moscow.
Viktor Tikhonov transitioned to coaching after his playing career. He started as an assistant coach at Dynamo Moscow. In 1968 he became the head coach of Dynamo Riga. He elevated the team to the top league of the Soviet Championship.
In 1977 Tikhonov became the head coach of CSKA Moscow and the Soviet national team. Under his leadership CSKA Moscow dominated Soviet hockey. The Soviet national team won multiple world championships and Olympic gold medals. His demanding coaching style emphasized discipline and tactical innovation.
