“Who was Joseph S. Beattie?” That’s a question I bet many of you are asking yourselves as we stand here at Beattie Triangle. This small park holds a powerful story. It is a story of sacrifice and remembrance.

Beattie Triangle isn’t just a green space. It is a memorial to a local hero. It honors Joseph S. Beattie. Beattie lived nearby at 247 Schenectady Avenue.

Joseph Beattie’s service in World War I was tragically short. He served as a private in Company G of the 305th Infantry. On October 5, 1918, Beattie died in battle. He succumbed to multiple wounds. His sacrifice would not be forgotten.

The land where we stand has a history of dedication. Back in 1884, Anton and Mary Vigelius gave this plot to the city of Brooklyn. They had one condition. It must always remain a park open to everyone. Fifteen years later, Brooklyn became part of New York City. The park then fell under the care of the New York City Parks Department.

The Beattie Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars played a crucial role. They insisted the park be named in Beattie’s honor. On February 1, 1921, their wish was granted. The park officially became Beattie Square. It was later referred to as Beattie Triangle.

There’s more to Beattie Triangle’s story. In May 1924, a captured German Krupp gun found its home here. The British seized this massive weapon during the War. It weighed 12,000 pounds. It was mounted on a concrete base right in the center of the park. Imagine that imposing gun standing here.

Sadly, the Krupp gun didn’t stay forever. During World War II, it was melted down. The scrap metal was used to make arms for the war effort. But, look closely. The concrete base where the gun once stood remains.

Beattie Triangle offers a unique charm. Its forest-like atmosphere sets it apart. Notice the pathway at the entrance. It leads to the right of the triangle. Here, an American flag proudly waves. It serves as a salute to Private Beattie. He gave his life for his country.

So, as you leave Beattie Triangle, remember Joseph S. Beattie. Remember his sacrifice. Remember the community that honored him. This small park stands as a testament to courage and remembrance. It reminds us to never forget those who served.
