José María Rubio was born far from here in Dalías Almería in 1864. He studied in Granada and Madrid. He was ordained a priest in 1887. He served in Chinchón and Estremera. He taught at a seminary. He even served as a notary for the Curia. He was also chaplain to the Bernardine nuns.
In 1906 he joined the Society of Jesus. He continued his ministry in Madrid. He worked tirelessly in the city’s poorest neighborhoods. He showed remarkable compassion. He helped the needy and the forgotten. He inspired lay people to live their faith in their daily lives. He even founded the “Marías de los Sagrarios”.
His work was not without its challenges. Madrid during his time was a city of stark contrasts. He faced poverty and injustice head-on. He offered spiritual and practical support. He was revered for his unwavering faith. His simple yet profound message resonated with many. His favorite saying was “To do what God wants and to want what God does”.
He died in Aranjuez in 1929. His death marked a profound loss. His legacy of faith and service lived on. He was beatified in 1985 and canonized in 2003. The canonization took place in Madrid’s Plaza de Colón. His remains rest at the church of San Francisco de Borja. Even today people visit to honor him and seek his intercession.
