Established in the heart of Freiburg’s Wiehre district, Spielvereinigung Blau-Weiß-Wiehre Freiburg boasts a rich history. The club’s story begins in 1994. It emerged from the fusion of two prominent Freiburg football entities: SpVgg Wiehre 04 and FC Blau-Weiß Freiburg. This union created a dynamic force in local football. Spielvereinigung Blau-Weiß-Wiehre Freiburg’s roots trace back even further. SpVgg Wiehre 04’s origins lie in the 1904 founding of Fussballclub Germania. In 1919, Germania merged with Fussballverein Victoria, forming Spielvereinigung Wiehre. A notable moment in their history came in 1943. Spielvereinigung Wiehre ascended to the Gauliga Baden, then the highest German league. They secured a respectable third place. After World War II, the club was dissolved and reformed as ASV Freiburg. In 1950, ASV Freiburg achieved promotion to the 1. Amateurliga Südbaden. The other half of Spielvereinigung Blau-Weiß-Wiehre Freiburg, FC Blau-Weiß Freiburg, began in 1911 as Athletik SV Freiburg-Haslach. After several name changes and a merger, they became FC Kickers Freiburg. They also played in the Gauliga Baden during the war. Post-war, the club was re-established as Blau-Weiß Freiburg. They competed in the 1. Amateurliga from 1947 to 1950. Spielvereinigung Wiehre 04 championed women’s football in Freiburg from the 1970s. This was a time when women’s football was still a rarity. The club’s commitment to promoting the sport paved the way for future generations of female players. The 1994 merger brought these two histories together. The newly formed Spielvereinigung Blau-Weiß-Wiehre Freiburg found its home at the renovated Schönbergstadion. The men’s team celebrated a significant victory. They won the Kreisstaffel A championship in the 2005/2006 season. This led them to the Bezirksliga Freiburg for the 2006/2007 season. The A-juniors also achieved a “cup double,” winning the Bezirkspokal in 2007 and 2008. In 2020, the club established a girls’ and women’s football department. This injected new energy into Spielvereinigung Blau-Weiß-Wiehre Freiburg. Beyond football, the club also had a table tennis department from 1970. Both men’s and women’s teams competed in the Regionalliga (3rd league). The table tennis department became independent in 2018, forming TTC Blau-Weiß Freiburg. The club also has four bowling alleys available for private and corporate events. The clubhouse and Schönbergstadion are located in the Sportpark Süd. They are easily accessible by public transport and bicycle.
