Hidden away in Cervignano d’Adda, Villa Marmont whispers tales of wartime intrigue and artistic brilliance. This unassuming rural retreat, designed by the renowned Gio Ponti in 1943, was no ordinary country house. Commissioned by Viscount Franco Marmont du Haut Champ, Villa Marmont became a haven for some of Italy’s greatest artists during World War II. Imagine De Chirico, Marino Marini, and Massimo Campigli strolling through these very grounds. They sought refuge within Villa Marmont’s walls, their creative spirits finding solace amidst the turmoil. Ponti, already celebrated for designing Casa Marmont in Milan for the Viscount, crafted this villa as a two-in-one masterpiece. The main house, with its large windows and inviting fireplace, was designed for the Viscount and his guests. A smaller attached residence housed the caretaker. The single-story brick structure, topped with a flat roof, embraced a simpler aesthetic befitting its rural setting. A unique feature of Villa Marmont was its collection of frescoes. Painted by the resident artists, these vibrant artworks adorned niches specially designed by Ponti. Sadly, time and decay took their toll. In the 1970s, the frescoes were removed for preservation. Today, Villa Marmont stands as a testament to a unique intersection of architecture, art, and history. It’s a place where creativity flourished amidst adversity. Its walls still echo with the laughter of artists and the quiet contemplation of a world at war.
