Gazing at the Kirche am Hohenzollernplatz, imagine the whispers of “Kraftwerk Gottes,” or “God’s Powerhouse,” echoing around its brick facade. This striking example of Brick Expressionism, designed by Ossip Klarwein in Fritz Höger’s firm, dominates the eastern edge of Hohenzollernplatz. The Kirche am Hohenzollernplatz, completed in 1933, was originally part of the Evangelical Wilmersdorf Congregation. Its name, meant to be temporary, became a permanent fixture, connecting it to the bustling square it overlooks. The church’s design sparked controversy with its bold modernism. A concrete skeleton supports the brickwork, creating a textured interplay of light and shadow. The soaring 66-meter bell tower became a Wilmersdorf landmark. Inside, thirteen ferroconcrete arches rise dramatically, reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral. This unexpected blend of styles contributed to the church’s “Powerhouse of God” nickname. Tragically, a fire in 1943 gutted the Kirche am Hohenzollernplatz, destroying Hermann Sandkuhl’s decorative graffiti and Erich Waske’s tympanum depiction of the Sermon on the Mount. The vibrant stained-glass windows, shattered during the bombing, were later replaced with new works by Sigmund Hahn and Achim Freyer. The meticulous reconstruction, completed in 1965, restored the prayer hall to its original colors. The Kirche am Hohenzollernplatz stands as a testament to resilience. It survived wartime destruction and emerged as a vibrant community hub. Today, it hosts contemporary art exhibitions, reflecting the congregation’s appreciation for art. Every Saturday, the “NoonSong” liturgy fills the air, drawing hundreds of listeners to experience the unique atmosphere of the Kirche am Hohenzollernplatz. As you stand here, imagine the echoes of its past and the vibrancy of its present, a true “Powerhouse of God” in the heart of Berlin.
