In the heart of Auderghem, Avenue Charles Brassine stretches before us, a quiet street whispering tales of war and remembrance. Avenue Charles Brassine isn’t just an avenue. It’s a tribute to a young lieutenant, Charles Eugene Marie Joseph Brassine, born in 1882. This 200-meter-long avenue connects Rue de la Chasse Royale to Boulevard du Triomphe. The houses along Avenue Charles Brassine are numbered from 1 to 37 on the odd side and 8 to 46 on the even side. Charles Brassine, grandson of Lieutenant-General Jacques-Joseph Brassine, volunteered for service during the First World War. He rose to the rank of lieutenant in the Grenadiers. Tragically, he died in a hospital in Amersfoort, Netherlands, in 1918. Avenue Charles Brassine was laid out in 1927. It cuts through the property once owned by former mayor Charles Madoux. Madoux had a nursery on this land. He was also married to a granddaughter of Lieutenant-General Brassine. Adding another layer to the story, Charles Brassine’s parents still owned the land when the avenue was created. The decision to name it after their son, a fallen soldier, was a poignant gesture. It immortalized the family name within the community they were a part of. Avenue Charles Brassine stands as a testament to a young life lost in war. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War. The avenue also reflects the intricate connections between local families and the history of Auderghem.
