Did you know Tabuado was once a couto a place of privilege? This small village nestled in the municipality of Marco de Canaveses boasts a rich history stretching back centuries. Tabuado’s story is one of resilience adaptation and faith.

Tabuado wasn’t always this quiet place. Until the early 19th century it was a couto a self-governing area. Imagine life here in 1801 when only 492 people called Tabuado home. Life was simpler then focused on agriculture and viticulture. The people of Tabuado found solace in their devotion to the Divine Savior the patron saint of their parish church.

The name Tabuado itself is fascinating. It likely originates from the Latin “tabulatu” meaning “a bridge of planks” perhaps referring to a structure crossing one of the many streams that run through Tabuado. This tells us something about the location and its challenges. The land’s geography dictated life here.

The Church of the Savior in Tabuado is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. A national monument it speaks of Tabuado’s enduring faith. Notice the main portal with its bovine-headed corbels. These aren’t just decorative elements they reflect architectural styles seen elsewhere in the Tâmega and Sousa regions. This church once formed part of a now-extinct convent. Inside marvel at the vibrant 16th-century mural paintings. They depict Christ as the judge flanked by Saint John the Baptist and Saint James.

Tabuado’s history goes further back. Evidence suggests settlements here long before the 11th century. Hilltop locations like Monte de S. Jorge indicate ancient defensive sites perhaps dating to the Castreja period. The names of local sites point to earlier Hispanic religious practices. Look for the remnants of ancient rock-hewn tombs near the sites of old hermitages. These are thought to be early Christian burial sites.

Even royalty left their mark on Tabuado. In the 12th century King Garcia of Galicia owned Tabuado. He gifted it to a loyal follower. Later Afonso Henriques granted Tabuado a charter of couto rights in 1131. This solidified its unique status for many years. A 13th-century Augustinian monastery further boosted Tabuado’s growth. It eventually became a secular abbey in 1475.

Today Tabuado has embraced change. Though agriculture and viticulture still play a role industries particularly textiles and construction have grown in recent decades. Yet amidst the modern changes the spirit of Tabuado endures. This small village still feels the weight of history faith and the stories of its people. The name Tabuado may be from a wooden bridge but its story is built on something far more enduring.
