Imagine stepping through time into a realm where stories whisper from ancient stones. This is the Jewish Cemetery Weissensee, a place of history. It is also a testament to Berlin’s vibrant Jewish community.

Established in 1880, the Jewish Cemetery Weissensee emerged from necessity. The Jewish community of Berlin had grown significantly. The existing cemetery in Schönhauser Allee could no longer accommodate the increasing numbers. Thus, a vast 42-hectare site was acquired in Weissensee. The Jewish Cemetery Weissensee became the final resting place for over 115000 people.

As you wander through the Jewish Cemetery Weissensee, notice how nature intertwines with remembrance. Overgrown paths create a maze-like atmosphere. Shady trees cast shadows over graves. The sounds of birdsong fill the air.

Many prominent Berliners found their final resting place here at the Jewish Cemetery Weissensee. Lesser Ury the painter rests here. Louis Lewandowski the composer is here too. Oscar Tietz, the department store founder, is also buried here. The publishers Samuel Fischer and Rudolf Mosse rest in peace here as well.

During the Nazi era, the Jewish Cemetery Weissensee became a refuge. Some Jews hid in mausoleums on the sprawling site to escape persecution. Secret burials took place for those living illegally in Berlin. Martin Riesenburger, who later became a rabbi, hid in the cemetery with his wife.

After the war, Heinz Galinski, chairman of the Jewish congregation in West Berlin, prevented the construction of an elevated highway over the cemetery. Restoration work began, preserving this cultural and historical memorial.

A memorial near the main entrance honors victims of the Shoah. The memorial stone bears the inscription Remember forever what happened to us. Slabs surrounding the stone are inscribed with the names of concentration camps. An urn field holds ashes of those who perished in the camps. Gravestones commemorate those who have no grave of their own.

The Jewish Cemetery Weissensee also features a monument honoring Jewish soldiers who fell in World War I. A plaque commemorates Herbert Baum and his anti-fascist resistance fighters.

The Jewish Cemetery Weissensee stands as a reminder of resilience. It is a place where stories of the past intertwine. It is also a memorial for the future.
