A whisper of emerald green against the Saigon skyline. That’s Mong Bridge. Right here before us stands this elegant structure. It’s more than just a bridge. It’s a living piece of Ho Chi Minh City’s history.
Mong Bridge connects District 1 and District 4. It’s one of the oldest bridges in the city. In fact it is the only remaining bridge built in the French style. Originally built in 1894 by the Messageries Maritimes company it was a vital link. The French called it the Pont des Messageries Maritimes. They also nicknamed it Arenciel. That means rainbow in English. A fitting name for this graceful arch.
The Vietnamese called it Cau Mong or Cau Mong. There are many stories behind this name. Some believe it was the first bridge in the city with a proper foundation. Mong and Mong sound similar. Another theory links it to its rainbow shape. Cau Vang or Mong also means rainbow in Vietnamese. So the name Cau Mong was born.
Initially Mong Bridge carried both vehicles and pedestrians. Later it became exclusively a pedestrian bridge. Then in the 2000s something amazing happened. Mong Bridge was dismantled. This was part of a larger project. The East-West Highway and Thu Thiem Tunnel were being built. After the highway and tunnel were finished parts of Cau Mong Bridge were reinstalled. New staircases were also added for pedestrians.
The bridge is 128 meters long and 52 meters wide. The pavement is only 05 meters wide. Its design is inspired by Western bridges from the late 19th century. The steel structure is painted an iconic emerald green. This makes it stand out. It’s like a jewel among modern buildings.
Today Mong Bridge is much more than a path. It’s a romantic spot for couples. Dozens of locks with couples’ names adorn it. It’s a favorite place for photos. Beautiful photoshoots are frequent here. Wedding photos are popular. Even tourists love this steel bridge. They love its historical beauty.
At night the foot of Mong Bridge is a local gathering place. People enjoy Vietnamese coffee and snacks. There are no fancy coffee shops. Just simple stalls and benches. It’s a place for relaxed conversation. It’s a perfect place to experience the true heart of Saigon. Mong Bridge isn’t just a bridge. It’s a symbol. A symbol of Saigon’s past present and future.
