Washington Hall wasn’t just any building. It was a red brick structure designed by the renowned John McComb Jr. Imagine the elegant banquet held there in 1824 for the Marquis de Lafayette. A grand celebration during his triumphant tour of the United States.

The building served many purposes. It was a hotel a restaurant a banquet hall. It even housed an oyster bar in its basement. It was originally owned by Dutch-American merchant John Gerard Coster. He later saw his grand hotel destroyed by fire.

But Washington Hall was more than just a place of commerce and celebration. It was a meeting place for important figures and organizations. The Washington Benevolent Society a semi-secret group linked to the Federalist Party met there. The first meeting of the Saint Nicholas Society founded by Washington Irving himself also took place within these walls.

Think of the speeches the deals the secrets exchanged within those brick walls. Samuel Akerly gave an address there about the education of deaf students. The event doubled as a fundraiser. The stories of Washington Hall are rich and varied. They reflect the life of a bygone era.

Sadly in July 1844 Washington Hall burned to the ground. Coster its owner died the following month. His heirs sold the property to A.T. Stewart. Stewart built the A.T. Stewart Dry Goods Store on the site. This store still stands today a testament to the enduring changes of Lower Manhattan.

Today Washington Hall Park is a peaceful reminder of this significant past. It’s a small green space. It is a place for quiet reflection.
