Three brothers. That’s all it takes to keep the spirit of Cella St. Benedikt alive in Hanover. This unassuming building on Voßstraße 36 houses a thriving Catholic monastery. It’s a modern monastery blending traditional religious architecture with contemporary community spaces. But it’s much more than meets the eye.
Cella St. Benedikt is a branch of the Benedictine Abbey of Königsmünster in Meschede. It wasn’t always here. It started with a request from Bishop Josef Homeyer of Hildesheim in 1984. He asked the Abbey to establish a new monastery in his diocese. After much deliberation the Abbey agreed. On July 11 1988 six brothers were sent to Hanover.
Their mission was ambitious. They aimed to develop contemporary forms of Benedictine life within a bustling city. It wasn’t simply about prayer and contemplation. They embraced urban spirituality. They sought to create a center for spiritual growth in the heart of Hanover.
Brothers Nikolaus Nonn Karl-Leo Heller and David Damberg continue this legacy. They maintain a structured daily rhythm. Their days include morning lauds midday prayers and evening vespers. They’re active members of their community. They also offer spiritual guidance.
The monastery isn’t isolated. It actively welcomes visitors. Sunday mass is held at 6 pm. Meditation sessions are offered on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm. Since 1997 Cella St. Benedikt has supported Cella Praxis for Breathing and Voice a publicly funded speech therapy practice. This is just one way the brothers serve the city.
In 2010-2011 a beautiful church was built within the monastery building. Architects Gido Hülsmann and Dirk Boländer created a space of remarkable clarity. A translucent alabaster wall separates the church from the street. The sanctuary is focused around a striking crucifix. This crucifix was designed by Father Abraham Fischer in collaboration with the architects. It is a perfect blend of modern design and spiritual reverence.
