“Is that a mirage shimmering above the Han River?” a child might ask, pointing towards the Haengju Bridge. Well, not quite a mirage, but a testament to resilience and engineering. The Haengju Bridge, a vital artery connecting Goyang and Seoul’s Gangseo District, has a story more dramatic than its sleek modern form suggests. This bridge, as we see it today, wasn’t the first attempt to span this stretch of the Han River. An initial Haengju Bridge was completed in 1978. However, the rapid growth of nearby cities like Ilsan and Bucheon soon overwhelmed the narrow structure. It became clear a new bridge was needed. Construction on a “New Haengju Bridge” began in 1987. Disaster struck in 1992. The new bridge, nearing completion, dramatically collapsed. Miraculously, the collapse occurred after work hours, sparing any lives. Imagine the shock of returning to a construction site to find your almost-finished project in ruins! The cause? A complex interplay of factors, including the ambitious use of a cable-stayed design, perhaps a bit too ambitious for the time. The collapse highlighted the growing pains of a rapidly developing South Korea, eager to embrace modern engineering but still learning the ropes. Undeterred, construction resumed after careful review and significant design changes. The New Haengju Bridge finally opened in 1995. But the story doesn’t end there. Even before the second bridge opened, work began on a third Haengju Bridge, nestled between the first and second structures. This third bridge was completed in 2000. With its completion, the original 1978 bridge was finally retired. Today, the Haengju Bridge isn’t just one bridge, but two. The second bridge carries southbound traffic, while its newer sibling handles northbound flow. So, next time you cross the Haengju Bridge, remember it’s not just a crossing over the Han River. It’s a symbol of perseverance, a reminder that even collapses can pave the way for stronger, more resilient structures, much like the vibrant city it serves.
