Roxborough Baptist Burial Ground

Why did the Roxborough Baptist Church establish its own burial ground? The Roxborough Baptist Burial Ground’s story begins with the church’s founding in 1789. The congregation acquired land in front of the old Roxborough Burial Ground in 1783. The church continued to expand its holdings, acquiring more land in 1804 and incorporating in 1812. Yet another plot was added to the east in 1818. The Roxborough Baptist Burial Ground officially opened in 1819. It served the community faithfully for many years, a testament to the enduring connection between life and faith. The church, initially tied to the older Roxborough Burial Ground (later Leverington Cemetery), sought autonomy in managing its own sacred space. This desire led them to create a separate burial ground, just adjacent to Leverington. While the property line between the two can be difficult to discern, the Roxborough Baptist Burial Ground holds its own unique history. The physical closeness of Leverington and the Roxborough Baptist Burial Ground reflects the intertwined nature of the community. Although distinct entities, they share the same hallowed ground, mirroring the shared experiences of the people they serve. The Roxborough Baptist Burial Ground served the community for over 150 years. Burials continued until 1983, marking the end of an era for this historic place. Today, the Roxborough Baptist Burial Ground stands as a quiet reminder of generations past, their stories etched in the stones and the soil. While the Roxborough Baptist Church itself closed in the 1980s, replaced by the Community Bible Fellowship of Roxborough, the burial ground remains a tangible link to the area’s rich religious heritage.
