“Is this the place where dreams begin?” That’s what I often wonder standing before the Auraria Early Learning Center. This isn’t just a daycare. It’s a vibrant hub in the heart of Denver. A place where children from diverse backgrounds learn and grow. The Auraria Early Learning Center sits on the Auraria Campus. This campus is home to three universities. Community College of Denver Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Colorado Denver are all Hispanic Serving Institutions.

The Auraria Early Learning Center uses a unique mixed-income model. This means that it serves families from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Roughly one-third of the families are parenting students often low-income. Another third are staff from the three universities. University staff get a 15 percent tuition subsidy. The remaining families are from the Denver community able to pay privately. This model creates incredibly diverse classrooms.

What’s truly special is the center’s commitment to flexibility. If a family’s income changes their child can still attend. This is different from most private centers. They do not have sliding-scale fee structures. A family might have to leave for more affordable care. The Auraria Early Learning Center cares deeply about its community. They assist with paperwork and funding for families. The center goes above and beyond. They ensure families get all the funding streams they qualify for.

Emily Nelson the director has been part of the Auraria Early Learning Center for many years. She started as a student teacher. Now she’s the director. Along with Assistant Director Rachel Ruiz she helps families navigate the often complicated funding processes. Their commitment is to the children and their families. Once paperwork is completed income levels become irrelevant. The focus is on creating a welcoming community for everyone.

The center’s close relationship with the universities provides unique opportunities for family engagement. Parents often chat during pick-up and drop-off. They do homework in the lobby. The center plans to add a food pantry and diaper bank. This is a wonderful example of community building. It will be open to all students on campus not just those with children.

The Auraria Early Learning Center faces ongoing challenges. These include rising operating costs and fluctuating enrollment. They need funding to make ends meet. They’ve received government and private grants. These grants enable them to offer scholarships. The future might include a shift towards more toddler care. This reflects a broader trend affecting many centers. This trend is due to changes in preschool funding.

Despite the hurdles the Auraria Early Learning Center remains dedicated to its mission. They’re proud of their impact on families. They celebrate graduations of student parents. They’re a pivotal part of their lives. The Auraria Early Learning Center is more than just a child care facility. It’s a beacon of hope and opportunity for families in Denver. It’s a place where the future is nurtured one child at a time. A place where dreams really do begin.
