Nestled in the heart of Dorchester, Calvary Baptist Church has a captivating story to tell. Calvary Baptist Church wasn’t always known by that name. It began its journey in 1903 as the First Swedish Baptist Church of Boston. They purchased a building on Shawmut Avenue, lovingly calling it Svenska Templet. The church thrived, eventually moving to a new home on Ashmont Street in 1936. This transition marked a significant moment, leading to the renaming of the church to Calvary Baptist Church in 1949. The church’s story takes a somber turn in 1977. A devastating fire caused extensive damage. The pulpit, choir loft, pastor’s study, and ladies’ parlor were severely affected, resulting in over $100,000 in damages. Amidst the destruction, a beacon of hope emerged. The Universalist Unitarian Church generously opened its doors, offering a temporary sanctuary for Calvary Baptist Church. From November 1977 to January 1981, services continued, demonstrating the resilience and community spirit. By February 1981, Calvary Baptist Church had triumphantly returned to its Ashmont Street location. The church’s history also reveals another intriguing detail. A trophy, discovered within the church’s archives, commemorates a “Race to Palestine” held by the Pi Theta and Baraca classes on July 3, 1915. This unique artifact offers a glimpse into the vibrant activities and community engagement that shaped the church’s past. The Calvary Baptist Church stands as a testament to its enduring legacy, shaped by its Swedish origins, resilience through adversity, and a commitment to its community.
