Gazing at St. Matthias Church, one might hear whispers of its resilient past. St. Matthias Church stands as a solitary historical figure amidst the modern Kulturforum in Berlin. This neo-Romanesque gem, designed by August Stüler, a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was completed in 1846. It served as a parish church near Tiergarten, during a period of rapid population growth. The church’s design is notable for its round, narrow arched windows, horizontal brick patterns, and triple-nave structure with three separate gables. It was also the first church in Berlin intentionally built in a square. Originally isolated amidst fields, it remarkably survived Albert Speer’s demolition attempts for the Germania project and the devastation of World War II. Reconstructed in 1960 with a modern interior, St. Matthias continues to stand as a testament to its enduring history. Today, it is renowned for its Christmas concerts and exhibitions, adding a vibrant touch to its historical narrative. Inside, admire the soaring ceilings and stained-glass windows. Reflect on the church’s pivotal role during the Cold War, when it acted as an unofficial cathedral for West Berlin after the Berlin Wall divided the city. St. Matthias Church is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a symbol of resilience, a beacon of faith, and a stage for the echoes of history.
