“Faithful Past and a Faith-Filled Future.” This was the theme for Gate of Heaven Parish’s anniversary. Gate of Heaven Catholic Church stands as a spiritual beacon in South Boston. It is located at 615 East Fourth Street. The church is a vital part of the community. It offers religious services and gatherings.
Gate of Heaven’s story began as an offshoot of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish. This happened during the Civil War. Father Patrick F. Lyndon was the pastor. The cornerstone of the first Gate of Heaven Church was laid on May 1 1862. The church was dedicated on March 19 1863.
Father James F. Sullivan became the first pastor on January 11 1865. The parish grew into the 20th century. In 1879 Father Michael F. Higgins erected a convent. It was located at the corner of I and East Fifth Streets. The convent was for the Sisters of St. Joseph. That same year the Sisters opened St Agnes School. It started with 375 girls. The school continues to provide education to Catholic youth. The present Gate of Heaven Church was built during Father Robert J. Johnson’s time. The lower church opened in June 1900. It was needed to serve the growing Catholic population. Cardinal O’Connell dedicated the upper church on May 12 1912.
Gate of Heaven Church shows French Gothic architecture. It is a magnificent building.
In November Archbishop Seán P. O’Malley celebrated Mass at Gate of Heaven. This celebrated the parish’s 140th anniversary. It also marked the school’s 125th anniversary. Children sang “Standing On The Shoulders.” Father Robert Casey welcomed everyone. Father Gilbert Phinn and Father A. Paul White also attended. Thomas O’Connor a “Gatey” alumnus gave a historical review.
Gate of Heaven is part of the South Boston Collaborative. It works with Saint Brigid of Kildare. They share resources and programs. Gate of Heaven offers Mass on Saturdays at 4:00 PM. Sunday Masses are at 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Confessions are on Saturdays from 3:30 PM to 3:50 PM.
Gate of Heaven Parish started a capital campaign. It sought to raise $2.5 million. This was to refurbish the church’s interior. The church’s records from 1789-1920 are searchable online. These records include baptisms and marriages. Over 7600 records and 11400 names are available. The records offer a glimpse into the lives of past parishioners. They show the enduring legacy of faith in this community. Gate of Heaven Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith history and community.
