From this breathtaking viewpoint at Mt Oiwa View place gaze across the sprawling landscape of Kyoto. Mt Oiwa itself is a significant location steeped in history. It’s also known as Mount Mikakusa Honorable Grass. This name arose because grass from the mountain was used to feed the horses of the first Tokugawa Shogun Ieyasu during his Kyoto visit in the early 17th century. The mountain’s connection to the Tokugawa Shogunate adds a layer of intrigue to its already rich past.

Before you lies the abandoned Oiwa Shrine. While abandoned since 2015 its history is fascinating. Founded by the Kii clan it became their sacred space. This was after they were displaced by the Hata clan who established a shrine at Fushimi Inari in 711. The shrine has seen its share of hardship. It suffered fire damage during the Onin War 1467-1477. Restoration did not occur until Meiji times in the late 19th century thanks to the Kubo family.

The trail to the shrine is a journey in itself. You’ll walk through bamboo groves and across log bridges spanning brooks. The path is dotted with torii gates both stone and wood. Keep an eye on your step though. Signs warn of mamushi viper snakes. These snakes mostly hunt rodents but a careless step could lead to an unpleasant encounter. There’s even a pond called Shirahime Ryujin O Kami White Princess Dragon God said to offer moments of quiet reflection.

The shrine’s reputed healing powers attracted many including the famous Kyoto artist Domoto Insho. He donated two large stone torii gates. The first was in 1952 while his mother was alive the second in 1963 after her death. His work can be found at the Kyoto Prefectural Domoto Insho Museum of Fine Arts. Notice the guardian foxes at the shrine. They stand guard just like those at Fushimi Inari Taisha.

From Mt Oiwa View place the panoramic view is incredible. You can clearly see Fushimi Momoyama Castle a striking landmark. The hike itself is a rewarding experience. The journey up Mt Oiwa is about 30 to 40 minutes a manageable climb for most. But remember to wear appropriate footwear.
