Deep beneath the bustling streets of modern Athens, lies a secret. A chilling glimpse into the darker side of ancient Athenian justice. This is the story of the Δεσμώτες του Φαλήρου. The discovery of the Δεσμώτες του Φαλήρου in 2016 sent ripples throughout the archaeological world. This site, located within the ancient Agora, revealed a mass burial. Around 80 skeletons lay in three shallow trenches. They were chained at the ankles, wrists, and necks. Many showed signs of violent trauma. The skeletons date to around 650-625 BC, during the reign of Cylon. He attempted a coup, but it failed. He sought refuge in the temple of Athena. His opponents lured him out, promising safe passage. They then broke their word and executed him. This grim scene likely represents some of Cylon’s followers. They paid the ultimate price for their leader’s ambition. The location of their burial, outside the city walls near the sanctuary of the goddess of justice, adds another layer to this grim tale. The positioning of the bodies seems deliberate. It served as a warning and a reminder of the state’s power. Even in death, the Δεσμώτες του Φαλήρου tell a story. A story of betrayal and brutal retribution. They provide a valuable window into the social and political landscape of 7th-century BC Athens.
