How did a company founded in Berlin end up with a prominent presence here at the r+v building in Hanover? The r+v’s story begins in 1922 in Berlin. Two entities, Raiffeisen Allgemeine Versicherungsgesellschaft and Raiffeisen Lebensversicherungsbank, were established. They shared personnel, laying the groundwork for what would become the r+v we know today. The company’s journey to Hanover, however, was not direct. The r+v, short for Raiffeisen- und Volksbanken Versicherung, experienced several mergers and name changes. It even relocated its headquarters due to the political climate and post-war divisions. In 1946, with West Berlin isolated, the r+v moved to Niederwalluf, then to Wiesbaden in 1948.

The r+v’s history intertwines with Germany’s tumultuous 20th century. In 1932, the company merged with Regeno Versicherung, becoming Regeno-Raiffeisen Versicherung. Just two years later, amidst the rise of National Socialism, the company’s name changed again to Deutscher Bauerndienst Versicherungsgesellschaften. After the war, the name shifted to Raiffeisendienst Versicherungsgesellschaften in 1948. The r+v’s current, abbreviated name, emerged in 1973. This reflects a key partnership formed in 1958 with institutions that evolved into today’s Volksbanken. This solidified the r+v’s connection to the cooperative financial landscape.

The r+v continued to expand its reach and services. In 1985, R+V Rechtsschutzversicherung AG was founded, specializing in legal protection insurance. R+V Krankenversicherung AG followed in 1987, covering health insurance. The company’s structure was reorganized in 1990 under the umbrella of R+V Versicherung Holding AG. This holding company later merged with Rhein-Main Rückversicherungsgesellschaft AG in 1994. The resulting entity retained the familiar name: r+v Versicherung AG.

Standing here, before this modern r+v building in Hanover, we see a physical manifestation of the company’s complex and evolving identity. While the headquarters remain in Wiesbaden, the r+v’s presence in Hanover underscores its national significance. It serves as a testament to the r+v’s commitment to the cooperative financial sector and its wide range of insurance services. The r+v has become one of Germany’s largest insurance companies. Its story, etched in mergers, relocations, and name changes, mirrors the broader historical shifts of the nation. As we move on from the r+v building, let’s carry with us a deeper understanding of this insurance giant and its woven legacy within the fabric of German finance.
