Were those whispers? Here, at Großsteingrab Sassnitz-Waldhalle 1, the air itself hums with ancient secrets. Großsteingrab Sassnitz-Waldhalle 1 is a portal to another time. A time of massive stones and whispered rituals. This megalithic tomb, also known by the Sprockhoff number 469, rests quietly in the woods northeast of Sassnitz. To find it, you would follow the road towards Stubnitz and Hagen. Just past a large parking area, a cobblestone road branches off to the Waldhalle restaurant. This path leads you to the Großsteingrab Sassnitz-Waldhalle 1 nestled within a gentle curve in the forest. A small sign points the way to this remarkable site.

The chamber of Großsteingrab Sassnitz-Waldhalle 1 stretches roughly east to west, measuring about 4 meters by 1.30 meters. Each long side is supported by three imposing stones. The western end is sealed with a closing stone. At the eastern short end, where the entrance once lay, sits a half-height stone. Two of the original three capstones still rest atop the structure. This site has seen the touch of restoration. When Sprockhoff documented it in 1931, the capstones lay scattered beside the chamber. Several individual stones around the chamber hint at what might have been an enclosing ring. Imagine the people who built this. They hauled these massive stones, carefully placing them to create a lasting monument to their dead.

The chamber, oriented east-west, measures about 4 by 1.3 meters. Each long side has three supporting stones. The west end still has its end stone. On the east side, likely the entrance, a half-sized stone sits. Two of the three capstones are still in place. It’s been reconstructed. Back in 1931, the capstones were scattered, according to Sprockhoff’s records. Loose stones around the main structure may be remnants of an outer enclosure. Großsteingrab Sassnitz-Waldhalle 1 is more than just stones. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and a connection to our distant past. Stand here, breathe in the quiet of the woods, and let your imagination soar back to a time when these stones were new, and the whispers were prayers.
