What if these limestone walls could talk? The Anna Barbara and Johann Engelbert Heidgen House Plaque stands as a testament to a family’s journey. It also represents a slice of San Antonio’s past.

Anna Barbara and Johann Engelbert Heidgen arrived in San Antonio from Prussia in 1852. They purchased land here. At the time, this was the eastern edge of the Irish Flats neighborhood.

Their first home was a simple one-story caliche structure. It faced Elm Street. As their family grew, they expanded the house. Anna Barbara and Johann had thirteen children. Eight of them lived to adulthood.

Family history tells a dramatic story. Their daughter Mathilda was abducted by raiding Indians. A posse from Powderhouse Hill rescued her. San Antonio was on the western frontier then. Attacks like this were common in the early 1800s.

Anna Barbara was a midwife. She helped bring new life into the world. Johann was a stonemason. He worked on St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He also worked on the rectory and St. Joseph’s Society’s Hall. The German parish was established in 1871.

Johann likely built his homes right here. He began construction on this larger house between 1882 and 1884. The west side of the house borders the Acequia Madre. It is also known as the Alamo Madre. Franciscan friars and Indian converts built this canal. It supplied water to the Alamo and its farmlands.

Originally, the house was covered in lime wash. The limestone and caliche rock construction is typical. It is a Texas German vernacular style once common here. The Heidgen family resided here until 1907.

Today, the Anna Barbara and Johann Engelbert Heidgen House is significant. It exemplifies architectural styles once common in San Antonio. It is a rare reminder of the city’s early residential areas. These neighborhoods were on the edge of downtown. This house received a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2003. This plaque commemorates their lives and contributions. Take a moment to appreciate this tangible link to San Antonio’s vibrant history. The Anna Barbara and Johann Engelbert Heidgen House Plaque marks more than just a building.
