Once a humble fishing and farming village, Aver-o-Mar now stands as a vibrant testament to time. Aver-o-Mar officially became a town in 2003. Later, in 2006, it became fully integrated into the city of Póvoa de Varzim. But its story begins much earlier. The earliest record of Aver-o-Mar, under the name Abonemar, dates back to 1099. Established by the knight D. Lourenço Fernandes da Cunha, Aver-o-Mar initially fell under the vast feudal territory of Varzim. This powerful region boasted administrative and military autonomy, stretching from the coastline to Mount Laundos. Over time, this feudal land was divided. Around 1656, due to a growing population of fisher-farmers, Aver-o-Mar was annexed to Póvoa de Varzim. Religiously, Aver-o-Mar belonged to the parish of Amorim. It wasn’t until August 10, 1922, that Aver-o-Mar finally achieved its long-sought independence, becoming its own parish. This separation from Amorim had been a local aspiration since the late 19th century. Throughout the 20th century, Aver-o-Mar’s rural and fishing communities thrived. With Póvoa de Varzim’s urban growth in recent decades, Aver-o-Mar underwent urbanization, becoming a seaside resort. Today, much of its nearly 10,000 residents are part of Póvoa de Varzim’s urban fabric. Aver-o-Mar has always been divided by two distinct communities. Fishermen and sand gatherers, known for their red hair and strong builds, lived by the sea. Inland, the villagers resembled the Galician people of Amorim. The sand gatherer, living off both land and sea, embodies a unique blend of two traditionally separate livelihoods in Póvoa de Varzim. Even today, agriculture remains a source of income for some residents. The Esteiro beach houses the picturesque Moinho Luísa Dacosta mill. This was the home of writer Luísa Dacosta, whose work reflects the harsh realities faced by the women of Aver-o-Mar in the past. This unique perspective shaped her writing and worldview. Aver-o-Mar’s transformation from a small village to a bustling town within a city reflects a remarkable journey. Its history, deeply rooted in fishing and farming, continues to shape its identity.
