Gokuraku-bashi Bridge a beautiful structure connects us to history. It’s a key part of Osaka Castle’s grand entrance. The bridge first appeared in 1626. That was when the castle was rebuilt by the Tokugawa Shogunate. The original wooden bridge was essential. Deep moats and tall walls protected the castle. These were added by the Shogunate during the Edo period from 1603 to 1868.
Tragically the first Gokuraku-bashi Bridge met a fiery end. It burned down in 1868 along with the castle. A century passed before its replacement. The current concrete bridge was built in 1965. That year Osaka Castle became a Special Historic Site. The bridge’s addition helped to preserve the area’s historical significance.
Look closely. Notice the contrast. To the north the modern skyscrapers of Osaka rise. To the south Osaka Castle stands in all its glory. The bridge offers a unique view. It shows the city’s past and its present.
