Gazing at the Sankt Johannes Basilika, have you ever imagined its cornerstone being laid in 1894? Sankt Johannes Basilika stands proudly in Berlin’s Neukölln district. It’s the largest Catholic church in Berlin and serves as the cathedral for the Military Ordinariate of Germany. This magnificent structure was designed by architect August Menken. He envisioned a basilica reminiscent of the Romanesque style found along the Rhine. The grand inauguration took place on May 8, 1897. Emperor William II and Empress Augusta Victoria graced the occasion with their presence. Years later, on December 3, 1906, Pope Pius X bestowed upon Sankt Johannes Basilika the prestigious title of Minor Basilica. Then, from February 1, 2005, it took on an additional role. It became the headquarters for the military ordinary of the Federal Government.
