How old is the oldest commercial building still standing in Utah? The answer is right before you The Chase Mill. This remarkable structure in Liberty Park is a testament to pioneer resilience and ingenuity. Built beginning in 1847 it was completed in 1852 by Isaac Chase a skilled miller from New York. His 13-year-old daughter even helped drive the wagon carrying the essential mill equipment across the plains.

The Chase Mill wasn’t just a mill it was a lifeline. During the devastating famine of 1856-1857 it provided free flour to the community. This act of generosity saved countless families from starvation. Imagine the relief the families felt receiving that life-saving flour. It’s a powerful story of community support and survival.

After two years Brigham Young joined Isaac Chase as a partner. Their partnership further solidified when Brigham married Isaac’s stepdaughter Clarrisa Ross Chase. This unique blend of business and family highlights the intricate social fabric of early Utah. In 1859 Isaac traded his share of the mill for a cabin in Centerville. He later became Brigham Young’s superintendent overseeing the construction of mills across the territory.

The mill continued operating until 1880 when Salt Lake City purchased the land. It then became mostly a storage shed. But thanks to preservation efforts and the Daughters of Utah Pioneers who leased it for a mere $1.00 a year since 1933 The Chase Mill stands as a proud monument to Utah’s heritage. A significant renovation between 2002 and 2006 ensured its survival and transformed it into the beautiful historic building you see today.

The Chase Mill isn’t just a building. It’s a living piece of history a reminder of the hardships overcome and the community spirit that built Utah. It’s a place where the scent of freshly ground flour still lingers in the air a testament to the enduring legacy of Isaac Chase and the pioneers who shaped the state. So take a moment to appreciate this remarkable landmark.
