During the Gabo Reform King Gojong reorganized the administrative districts. In 1914 Sinwol became part of Gimpo-gun. It was then known as Sindang-ri Yangdong-myeon. The name Sindang-ri came from the villages of Sinwol and Danggok.
Danggok was also called Danggol. This was because of a city shrine where rituals were held. Koeunwol meant a town where the moon shines bright. This originated from the Korean word for beautiful moon. Shindae meant newly founded village. Sinwol and Gateri were named after the region’s shape. They resembled the half-moon on the east side of Jeungsan. This area is now Sinwol 3-dong.
Sinwol-dong has an area of 5.14 square kilometers. In 2001 its population was 156264. This means a density of 30401.56 people per square kilometer. That is about 78739.7 people per square mile.
